NDIS transport funding explained: levels, claims and common mistakes

Transport is funded in three levels under the NDIS. Knowing which level applies to a participant changes how you book, how you claim, and how much funding actually flows.

NDIS transport funding explained: levels, claims and common mistakes

Transport is one of the most under-claimed line items in the NDIS, because it is one of the most misunderstood. There are three levels of funding, two ways to claim, and a handful of mistakes that quietly cost participants thousands a year.

The three levels

  1. 1Level 1: participants not working, studying or volunteering more than 15 hours per week
  2. 2Level 2: participants in study, work or volunteering up to 15 hours per week
  3. 3Level 3: participants seeking employment, in supported employment, or in higher-hour study with substantial support needs

What transport funding can pay for

  • Taxis and rideshare
  • Mileage when a support worker drives
  • Contracted accessible vehicle services
  • Public transport fares when supported by a worker

Booking transport that actually works

Reliable transport for NDIS participants is rarely about price — it is about predictability. The same driver, the same vehicle, the same pickup window. A cheap ride that does not show up is the most expensive ride in the plan.

Quick answers

Can transport be claimed with personal care on the same visit?

Yes — they are two different line items and are claimed separately on the same booking.

What if I do not have transport in my plan?

Raise it at your next plan review with evidence of unmet need. Document missed appointments.

Can family members be paid to drive?

Generally no — paying informal supports is restricted. There are narrow exceptions; ask your coordinator.

Key takeaway

Confirm your level, book for predictability, claim every eligible trip. Transport is a small budget line that punches well above its weight in independence.
